Which type of pump station do I need?

Wastewater pump stations are essential at some sites to facilitate the flow of foul water and waste. They are used when a gravity connection cannot be achieved to transfer wastewater from a site to an area where it can join the existing network.

If you cannot achieve a connection to the existing network, then it is likely that you will need a pump station to transfer wastewater away from your site.

There are three main types of below-ground pumping stations.

Package pump stations

A package pump station is any chamber that is sent to site with pipework and valves already installed.

Pros

  • Typically cheaper
  • Minimises confined space entry on site
  • Reduced installation time

Cons

  • Shorter life span
  • Not usually a structural unit
  • Limited depth range

Pre-cast concrete pump stations

Pre-cast concrete pump stations involve the chamber being constructed in situ and subsequently fitted out with the required equipment.

Pros

  • Longer life span
  • More durable
  • Good for high water tables
  • Greater range of sizes

Cons

  • Typically more expensive
  • Longer installation and commissioning period on site

Adoptable pump stations

Adoptable pump stations are designed to the relevant water authority’s requirements and offered up for adoption by them under a 104 application.

Pros

  • Cost of ownership and maintenance ultimately taken on by the relevant authority
  • Significantly reduced storage requirements
  • Higher equipment specification

Cons

  • Higher initial capital costs
  • More involved design and installation
  • Time needed for the approval process
  • Larger area required on site

Looking after your pump station

Pump stations consist of mechanical equipment so, like cars, they require regular monitoring and maintenance to ensure they are operating correctly and efficiently. Regular maintenance ensures any issues are identified and addressed before they lead to more serious failure, which may result in costly repairs or flooding of the site.

FAQs

A pump station is usually required if the site’s drainage cannot feed into the existing gravity network. A pump station will ‘pump’ the liquid to a point where it can connect into the gravity network.

Willow Pumps provides Mechanical and Electrical (M&E) designs, supply and installation for Glass Reinforced Plastic (GRP) package pump stations, pre-cast concrete stations and adoptable pump stations.

The main difference between SSG and SFA is that SSG introduced more guidelines on SUDS, which involves a more sustainable approach to drainage. SSG was also made publicly available, removing the previous pay wall associated with SSG and making the guidelines more accessible.

All applications to water companies changed over to Sewer Sector Guidance towards the end of 2020. NAVs (New Appointments and Variations) who discharge to the undertakers network under a bulk discharge agreement as of yet do not have to comply with SSG.

Typically our pump stations contain two pumps: one duty pump and one backup to ensure continuous operation. In the unlikely event of station failure the pumps alternate duty with each pump cycle to ensure even wear. However, where required we can design single pump stations or multi pump stations to meet your needs.

Telemetry is used to provide remote updates on your station. The pump station as standard has localised audible and visual alarms for pump trip and high-level alarm. For remote stations it is recommended that you consider telemetry to provide as early a warning signal as possible. It is also a requirement of some warranty providers to have telemetry in place for your pump station.

Willow Pumps has its own GSM telemetry (mobile signal) unit, which is monitored 24 hours a day by our in-house team. It also had the facility for emergency contacts to be added who can be sent alerts via email or mobile phone. If required, access can also be given to the online portal where you can monitor your pump station in real time. As standard the system is set up to monitor power fail, pump 1 tripped, pump 2 tripped and high-level alarm. Should you require any additional signals, let us know and we can add them to the unit accordingly. Should sufficient signal not be present for the GSM telemetry then we can provide a high gain aerial or different connection options.
