Sewage Treatment Plant Installation in Wiltshire for Nutrient Neutrality

We recently completed a sewage treatment plant (STP) installation project with a strong focus on nutrient neutrality. The work involved decommissioning an old septic tank, relocating key equipment, and carefully managing topsoil and drainage areas. By combining precise excavation, electrical expertise, and responsible soil grading, we ensured that the site not only functions efficiently but also supports sustainable nutrient management.

The Challenge: Complex Site and Environmental Requirements

The project required more than just a standard sewage treatment plant installation. Existing septic infrastructure needed decommissioning without disturbing the surrounding soil balance, and the drainage field required careful excavation. Relocating the air compressor behind a tree line introduced additional complexity, with watertight electrical and hose connections required to maintain operational safety. Achieving nutrient neutrality meant grading and managing topsoil precisely to prevent nutrient runoff, while importing additional soil ensured a level working area, all within stringent environmental and safety guidelines.

The Solution: Precision Sewage Treatment Plant Installation and Nutrient Management

We approached the sewage treatment plant installation with a detailed plan that prioritised nutrient neutrality. A 3.5-ton excavator stockpiled existing topsoil, exposing the drainage field for removal by a Grab vehicle, while excess soil was repurposed for backfilling the decommissioned septic tank. The old tank was reduced by 150mm, with its concrete frame removed, compacted, and secured.

The air compressor was relocated three metres behind the tree line into a beehive housing, with all electrical cables and hose connectors placed in a watertight chamber. Topsoil was graded carefully over excavation areas, with eight tonnes of additional soil imported to create a level, stable site. Electrical cables were joined using resin-sealed scotch cast joints, and the aeration hose was fully replaced to eliminate joints, ensuring optimal nutrient processing in the STP.

Every step was executed to maintain nutrient balance, prevent runoff, and promote environmentally responsible wastewater treatment.

The Outcome: Sustainable and Compliant Installation

The project delivered a safe, efficient, and environmentally responsible sewage treatment plant installation. Old infrastructure was removed safely, the air compressor and STP equipment were installed securely, and the site grading ensured nutrient neutrality by preventing nutrient leaching or imbalance.

Willow Pumps’ approach demonstrates a commitment not only to operational efficiency but also to sustainable environmental practices. The result is a fully functional STP that supports local ecosystems, complies with environmental standards, and showcases Willow Pumps’ expertise in integrating nutrient-conscious engineering solutions.
