The Benefits of Working With Us

How to Reduce the Risk of Legionella

Proper water system management is critical to minimising the risk of Legionella bacteria, which can cause serious health issues such as Legionnaires’ disease. Here are key steps to help reduce the risk:

  • Maintain Water Turnover – Water can begin to degrade within just 7 days when stored or recirculated. Regular flushing and replenishing with fresh mains water is essential to maintain water quality and reduce stagnation.
  • Monitor Water Temperatures – Legionella thrives in water temperatures between 20°C and 45°C. Regular flushing and temperature control are necessary to prevent bacterial growth within this range.
  • Remove Contaminant Build-Up – Accumulations such as rust, sludge, scale, and organic debris in tanks or pipework can provide an ideal breeding ground for bacteria. As outlined in ACoP L8 guidance, these should be removed through annual cleaning and maintenance.
  • Control Aerosol-Generating Systems – Systems that produce fine water droplets—such as showers, irrigation systems, kitchen washdown hoses, and external spray areas—pose a higher risk, as they can release airborne bacteria. These areas must be monitored and maintained regularly to protect employees, contractors, and visitors.

Stay compliant and protect your people. Contact us today to arrange a Legionella risk assessment or maintenance service.
